Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a diagnostic label to indicate deficits in social communication and interaction. As well as restricted interests and repetitive behaviors that may affect an individual's daily life in society. It is important to note that symptoms of ASD differs from each individual.
Individuals are usually diagnosed by their Primary Care Managers (PCM) or approved specialists (e.g. Clinical Psychologists, Pediatric Neurologists, Board-Certified Developmental Pediatricians, Board-Certified Neurodevelopmental Pediatricians).
Autism treatment varies depending on the individual and their specific ASD characteristics. Autism treatment may include Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and ABA, among others.
Applied Behavior Analysis is an evidence-based science that is used to modify behavior in a way that improves an individual's quality of life based on objective data that is collected through observation. Qualified and trained professionals (BCBA) create a treatment plan based on an individual's specific areas of improvement which may include the increase or decrease of behaviors and teach new skills.
Since ABA services are customized to each individual, it can be modified and improved as needed. By constant monitoring and updating, BCBAs are able to teach skills that are achievable to each individual based on the way they learn, and build on these skills until overall goals are reached.
ABA services adapt to each individual's needs. As people grow and reach certain stages of life, they may benefit from different levels of support to reach each milestone. Due to this, longevity of ABA services will differ for each individual.
